Deep-sea diving (THE BENDS?)?

For my science homework, i have to create a brochure, about "deepsea diving and the effects of the BENDS"

Well Isaac Newton was the one who studied and came up with ideas relative to the speed of sound...the speed of sound underwater is much faster than above water.

Pressure is an issue underwater, the deeper you go, the more pressure is put on your body and your lungs..therefore, the deeper you go the more oxygen your lungs need.

Force is put upon your lungs underwater and it is important not to hold your breath underwater because the oxygen your lungs need at 10 feet will not be the same at 20 feet and you could bust a lung.

The pivot method is used by divers to achieve neutral bouyancy...which means the diver is trying to stay in the water without floating up or down...they are neutral in the water...the pivot method helps divers achieve this.

When you dive you experience almost zero gravity, this is why divers use a weight belt to help them go down from the surface...once down below divers have to use their dive vest (which contains air) to help them stay neutrally bouyant (stop them from sinking or either raising to the surface)

The weights are used by divers for bouyancy....the amount of weight differs for each person and their body weight and if they are diving in fresh or salt water. Weight belts are often used by divers but sometimes divers can use what is called a weight integrated system, where the weights are actually in their vest, but can be removed in an emergency situation.

The deeper a diver goes down undewater the more dense the air becomes. Dense air is harder to inhale and exhale than air at the surface, so divers try to take slow deep breaths while diving to conserve the air they have. A tank of air may last an hour diving at 10 feet but when you are diving at 30 feet the air is more dense so you use more of it and the tank will not last as long.

Blaise Pascal was a mathmatician who contributed a lot to the world of diving because of his study of fluids. He was the one who came up with the rules on how liquid could affect air pressure and how when at different levels it would cause a vacuum. This is the basic concept used by divers and why we know that if we don't compensate for the pressure of the water on our lungs as we go deeper then we could bust a lung.

Divers use pneumatic cylinders (referred to as air cylinders) when diving. These cylinders hold compressed air which is released to the diver when diving, the air is released according to the pressure that is exerted onto the cylinder, compensating for the dive depth and lung capacity.

now...take all of that (i tried to cover all the terms you gave) and then use the answer from the other guy on the bends and you will have your homework.

hmmm...i feel all dirty inside...is this considered cheating? lol
